THEME THREE

MEDIA AND COMUNICATION

We are Miriam, Laura S, Laura Garcia and Cristina! We watch a lot of TV, we watch the News to find out what is happening in the world. We watch sports, Barça of course (eh Bartek?) and we watch TV series. We are watching one now called “El Barco”, it’s great because it is about love and intrigue (and the boys are good looking).

  "El Barco"

Some of us also watch programmes like “Mujeres y Hombres y Viceversa”, “Sálvame” and others. Really these programmes are rubbish, programmes about gossip, famous people, footballers etc. We know they are all rubbish but they are very entertaining.

Despite all the TV that we watch we also spend a lot of time on internet. This is because we can find lots of information for our school work, for projects, for our English… basically we use Facebook a lot. J Our favourite pages and programs are YouTube, Spotify, Series Yonquis, El Mundo Deportivo, Moodle, El Rincon del Vago and others. Some of these are for music and some are for fun and others for work.

We also use some older sorts of media, we listen to the radio when we are having a shower or in the car. We listen to music stations, Flaixback, 40 Principales, Cadena Dial and RAC 1 for the football!

All of us have a mobile phone. We use our mobiles for messages, calling, taking photos, listening to music and now (more and more) for connecting to internet. Miriam has the most “pijo” mobile. (Pijo means posh or flash)

Other things we use are i-pods for music and the radio. Some of us read newspapers like El Mundo Deportivo, Sport, Marca, but these are for sports mainly. Others read local newspapers, La Veu de l’Ebre, etc. We also buy magazines, principally ones about famous people and things like that (Pronto, Cuore, ¡Que Me Dices!, etc.

                                                               The front cover "Pronto"

Our fathers when they were young they had only, TV, radio, telephone, newspapers and magazines.

In the TV could only see two channels and the image was in black and white. On the radio listening to news, music and more. They bought many newspapers and read the news section, sports, economy, etc. And the magazines were of heart and had novels in the same journals. They also read many comics.

FATHER'S SCHOOL!

When my parents started primary school they were six years old and now that we are start primary school when we are three years old.
They weared uniform to the school.
The boys and the girls were separated, the boys in one class and the girls in another.
Also the religion subject were obligatory in the school.
The teachers were very strict and sometimes beat students who didn't know a subjects.
The teachers weren't called by their name their were called by "Mr" or "Mrs" and follow of their names.
In my parent's period they used to finish the obligatory school when they were fourteen years old and now this age is two years later. Also an important part of the students left the studies because they had to work.

Difference between ancient school and the present school

My parents had lived quite well with the school because they hadn't a diference about the system of education. They studied in the same decade but If I compare the education of my parents with the education of my grandparents, I can see some diferences. When my grandparents were children, they had a lot of problems because they couldn't go to school. A lot of children couldn't go to school because his parents needs their to work in familly farms.

About 50 years ago, the school system was seen by rich children rich or potencially. In the 40s, after the civil war, the political sistem in Spain had a lot of changes. Franco achieved the government and many children couldn't go to school because they had to work with their families.
In the ancient school, the teaching metods was very stricts and if you didn't pay attention or you didn't have the works, they could punish with corporal punishment. It was usually that the teacher hit the children in their hands with a long ruler.
Every morning, it was usually than childrens and teachers went to the schoolyard to sing the Falange's hymn called "cara al sol". It's obvious that the ancient school was fascist, like the government and the political situation.

Actually, the school is a place to study and learn. Over the years new technologies have evolved and actually you can find in a school many computers, televisions and other electronic machines. In a lot of schools, the traditional blackboard it's just a thing of the past because in this centers, teachers use electronic blackboards and the students use netbooks instead of the traditional books. Frecuently, students use netbooks to search in internet about their studies. Internet is actually one of the best tools to search information.
Another difference about the ancient school and the present school is the religion. In ancient school you had study about the catholic religion because it was very important for the society. Actually, religion isn't required, but some private schools like catholic schools it's still bind study the catholic religion and his doctrine.

There are many differences but really I will not change the actually school before the ancient school. :)

Míriam's mother say: The school had differences, the main ones are: the students were silent when the teacher came, they had much respect for the teacher, the teachers were told" Mr "or" Mrs. ", the school had competitions with other schools (they played basketball, running, football ...) My mother was a basketball player, the make a theater to show parents at Christmas.

WHEN MY PARENTS WENT TO SCHOOL. LAURA SANTAMARIA

When my parents went to school was very different than it is now.

My father went to a school where there were only boys. Were always wearing shorts even though it was winter. Before the class started praying and classes was necessary to talk with Spanish and if they spoke with their native language, Catalan, they could get to torture.
Before it was not required to finish the studies, if you wanted to study more and went to work enough! My father went to work with seventeen years in a business that had his father.

And in school he was my mother had boys and girls. But they were treated badly. If they spoke, they made no duties or misbehaving beat them. My mother remembers a time not learned the lesson and the teacher told him to put his hand on the table with a meter and then started hitting her fingers.

According to my parents, education has changed a lot and now it's all different and yet here a few years will have changed more. They consider it normal that now I have no respect for teachers as possible if you had no respect and you beat it they did understand force, however, now only a warning that goes in one ear and out the other .

THE EVOLUTION OF EDUCATIONAL BUILDINGS

Now ...if we were the directors, principally we will change the horary. We would like to intensive horary (enter at 8:30am and leave at 15:00pm) because now we leave at 5:30pm some afternoons. Also change the holiday week of February and put it at the beginning or the end of the course.

Do their parents think that school now is better or worse? Our parents think the school was much better before. Before there were more discipline, more respect, more attention to the teacher, clothing was different ... more things.

Was their parents time at school useful for them? Many of them could not afford the race and came to work in the 14 years. Those could afford the studies had much luck.

Have their studies helped them in their life? Not because the companies hired good people and not having titles.

MORE ABOUT OUR INSTITUTE

The old building

Our school is called IES Roquetes. It’s located in Catalonia, in the “Baix Ebre”, in “Roquetes”.
The institute was founded in the year 1996-1997 and called "La Ibèrica" but in the year 2002-2003 was a new building, the “IES Roquetes”.
We are in the old building. The school where we are now is a five minutes from the main school. We are very well because it is a quiet and there isn’t a monitored so we have all the responsibility.
Our school is different because there are more students of different places: Benifallet, Pauls, Alfara Reguers, Xerta, Aldover, Raval de Christ, Jesus and finally Roquetes.
They come to school with free transportation and also can get to eat free.

                                          The new building

In new school there are: 3 computer rooms, 2 classrooms for technology, classroom language 1, 2 laboratories, 1 draw classroom, 1 music classroom and a gym.
